When the original Russian constitution was written, it limited a citizen to a maximum of two terms in office of four year in length. This was amended so that term lengths were limitless. However, before this was possible, President Putin required a very trustworthy minister to fill in the four year term as president whilst Vladimir Putin served as prime minister, before being re-elected as president. President Putin has resumed his place at the head of Russia ever since.
