To quote the estate agent…
Built in 1926 to cleanse the water supplied by Hayeswater to the market town of Penrith, The Filter House is a large building designed to resemble a small stone cottage from a distance. Dressed with oversized windows and doors, The Filter House strikes a picturesque pose amidst the mountains and cascading waters of the Hayeswater Gill.
In the 1980s, a small side extension was added to the north face of the building, providing those working at The Filter House with a toilet and washroom.
A longstanding relationship with The National Trust has been in place since 1902 when the organisation planted a tree to commemorate its first land ownership, whilst the land to the south of Hayeswater Gill was gifted to the Trust by Lake District Farm Estates Ltd. in 1976, with more surrounding land acquired by the National Trust in 1992.
In the early 2000s, for financing reasons, Hayeswater dam was removed and The Filter House sat dormant, before being sold at auction in 2008.
Work was undertaken in 2009 to sink a borehole for a private water supply and replace all the windows with bespoke double-glazed units along with the installation of a shower to compliment the exiting WC, full electrics, a phone line and a septic tank with soak-away.
