Russ McLean was originally destined to follow his father and grandfather into the Royal Navy. Being from an island, he obtained his boatmaster’s licence at a young age. However, relationships meant a career on dry land and the vocation of police officer followed; being injured on duty and ironically returning to a nautical vocation, albeit as a harbourmaster on dry land.
Police service that ends before the usual 20 year span can be a sensitive area. Especially in this internet age.

Russ McLean had NO demerits in his police career. There were commendations and decorations from Chief Constable Patrick Hamill and after Sir Patrick retired, further commendations from Chief Constable Andrew Sloan.

That reason was because of spinal injury sustained whilst on duty:-
1]. Assisting a waterlogged casualty out of the sea at Campbeltown Harbour. Unfortunately it was shortly after midnight and no backup emergency service officers were available to assist. That was the first spinal injury. Crucially the casualty survived.
